Your battery tester displays “Charge & Retest.” Should you buy a new battery, put it on a charger or run the test again? The message gives you a next step, not an automatic replacement verdict.
In general, charge the battery using an approved procedure, complete the required test preparation, and then test again. Check your instrument's manual for its exact meaning and follow-up rules. Do not charge a battery that is damaged or unsafe to handle.
This guide concerns compatible automotive lead-acid starting batteries. It is not a charging procedure for lithium batteries or high-voltage EV packs.

1. Check Safety Before Charging
Inspect the battery first. A cracked case, leakage, swelling, loose posts or evidence of freezing calls for qualified help, not another charging attempt. Wear eye protection, protect your skin, work with ventilation and keep sparks and flames away. Do not open a sealed battery.
These precautions are consistent with Schumacher's battery safety and inspection guidance. A prompt on a tester does not override visible damage or a manufacturer's warning.
If you cannot identify the battery type or safely reach the approved connection points, let a workshop handle the charging and testing.
2. Verify the Test Setup
Before interpreting a result, check that the test was performed with the correct battery technology, labeled rating and matching rating standard. Review the clamp contact and any instructions about vehicle loads or recent charging.
Midtronics explains that preparation and operating conditions can make results misleading in its guide to misleading battery-test results. Correcting a setup error is legitimate; changing the entered rating merely to obtain a “good” result is not.

3. Use a Compatible Charger and Program
A tester assesses a battery; a charger replenishes it. Select a charger approved for the battery's voltage, technology and capacity. Follow the battery, charger and vehicle instructions, including whether charging in the vehicle is permitted and which connection points to use.
Do not assume every AGM battery requires the highest available charging voltage. The CTEK PRO120 manual, for example, notes that some AGM batteries require a lower-voltage program. The battery's specification matters more than a general rule about the chemistry.

If the charger reports a fault or will not start, follow its troubleshooting instructions or seek help. Do not bypass safeguards, improvise a second-battery connection or use a repair mode unless the manufacturers explicitly permit that procedure.
4. Prepare for the Retest
Finish charging and disconnect the charger according to its instructions. Then follow the tester's requirements for rest time or surface-charge handling before testing. A reading taken immediately after charging may not represent the battery's resting condition.

A useful record includes the battery label, tester model, settings, initial result, charger used and final result. This is more helpful to a technician than a cropped photograph showing only one percentage.
5. Act on the Final Result
If the battery passes: keep the record, but do not treat it as proof that the entire vehicle is fault-free.
If the same message returns: follow your model's escalation rule. For example, the MDX-500 manual directs replacement if “Charge & Retest” persists after a full charge. That rule belongs to its documented procedure, not every analyzer.
If results remain unclear: ask a qualified workshop or battery supplier to confirm charge completion, setup and battery condition. Repeatedly charging and testing without resolving the cause is not a maintenance plan.

Where a Battery Load Tester Fits
A load test checks voltage while a battery supplies a specified current. Charge condition matters before performing it; a load tester does not put energy back into the battery. Schumacher explains the distinction between charge assessment and load testing.
