Choosing between a battery load tester and a conductance tester starts with one question: what do you need to learn about the battery? Both can support a starting-battery diagnosis, but they do not obtain their results in the same way.
The short answer: a traditional load tester applies a substantial electrical load and shows how battery voltage responds. A basic conductance tester uses a small electrical signal to estimate cranking capability. What Does a Battery Load Tester Actually Check?
A traditional load tester draws substantial current for a limited period. You observe the battery's loaded voltage and interpret it using the instrument's instructions, including any temperature corrections. This adds information beyond a resting-voltage measurement.
A fixed 100A tester is not interchangeable with an adjustable carbon-pile tester. A procedure written for a different load, battery rating or test duration cannot simply be transferred to it. How Does a Conductance Battery Tester Work?
Conductance testing examines how a battery responds to a small electrical signal. The result is related to the battery's ability to supply starting power. A compatible analyzer can use that response, together with the entered battery rating, to estimate cranking capability without performing a traditional sustained high-current load test.

Digital Is a Display Type, Not a Test Method
A digital readout alone does not tell you whether an instrument uses conductance, a resistive load or a combination of methods. Before buying, find the specification that describes how it tests the battery.

Which Tester Should You Choose?
For occasional checks on a compatible starting battery: consider whether a straightforward loaded-voltage reading answers your question. A fixed-load tool may fit that workflow when its approved test procedure matches your battery.
For a workshop testing varied vehicles: compare supported battery technologies, rating standards, instructions and record-keeping options. Check that any printing or report-export feature you need is actually included in the model.
For unresolved symptoms: do not buy a second tester solely to obtain a different pass/fail message. First establish what the first test measured and what it did not. Choosing a tool is easier when you can name the remaining diagnostic question.
Why Can Two Battery Testers Disagree?
Before deciding that one tool is wrong, review the setup:
- Battery identification: use the correct battery type and, where requested, its labeled cranking rating and matching standard.
- Charge condition: follow instructions for insufficient charge and surface charge.
- Connections: use the prescribed connection points and obtain clean, secure contact.
- Test conditions: account for temperature and other conditions specified by each instrument.

A Straightforward Load-Testing Option from Platrex

Safety Comes Before Either Test
Wear eye protection, work in a ventilated area and keep ignition sources away. Do not test a frozen, leaking, swollen or visibly damaged battery. Stop and seek qualified help when battery condition is uncertain.
High-current load testers generate heat. Observe the exact on-time and cooling instructions for your model; never keep applying the load to force a clearer result. Follow the vehicle's procedure for connection and disconnection. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a conductance tester always better than a load tester?
No universal winner follows from the method alone. Select an instrument with the right battery coverage and procedure for the diagnostic task. This guide is a method comparison, not a head-to-head accuracy test.
Will either basic test tell me the battery's remaining amp-hours?
Not directly. Cranking capability, reserve capacity and charge acceptance are separate aspects of battery performance. A satisfactory cranking result does not establish usable amp-hour capacity. Does a good result mean I can ignore a starting problem?
